Role of Teacher Quality and Working Conditions in TIMSS 2019 Mathematics Achievement

This correlative study examined the role of teacher qualities and working conditions in 4th 8th-grade Turkish students’ mathematics achievement TIMSS 2019. Teacher qualifications were defined based on questionnaire used 2019 discussed three categories: personal characteristics, qualifications, practices. Data analyzed using multilevel regression analysis. According to results, explained most variance scores (49% 4th-grade 40% 8th-grade), while teachers’ characteristics least (19% 11% 8th-grade). about one-third between-schools (35% 26% practices one-fifth (23% 27% Some variables had a high correlation with 8th-grade, such as age, experience, teaching limited by students not ready for instruction, parental pressure teachers. Other significant predictors having major education mathematics, bringing interesting materials class, long-term assessment projects, too many administrative tasks, number class.
